Refresh your cultural paradigm in Valencia in May
The location and time could not be better chosen for this year´s intercultural congress, entitled “Refreshing the cultural paradigm” organised by SIETAR Europa, the largest society of intercultural education, training and research in Europe.
From May 21st to May 23rd all those who by profession stand at the interface of cultures, such as business interculturalists, consultants and researchers, should seize the opportunity and get an alternative view of cultures that focuses on the intercultural dependency of cultures and collective phenomena by signing up for the congress.
The location: The city of Valencia is a visible example of the mixing of cultural heritage and modern technology. There is an enormous potential of cultural synergies in this Mediterranean city, merging the remnants of its ancient Roman past with some of the most audacious and post-modern buildings from the 21st century.
Just in time: It has never been more important than now to re-examine our cultural dimensions and paradigms — the complexity of cultures and differences in values, which are impacting our societies, companies and the life of each individual more and more. Globalization, multiculturalism and technical innovation urge us to adopt to new situations almost everyday. How can we cope and deal more effectively with this situation?
With prominent keynote speakers, a wide variety of intriguing workshops – also pre- and post-congress ones — participants in the congress will get practical answers to this most fascinating field, which has an immediate effect on the present and the future of us all.

for individuals to serve on SIETAR Europa Working Committees
The Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research, (SIETAR) Europa is a leading organisation dedicated to the promotion of interculturalism. The society promotes the ideas of intercultural understanding in Europe, serves as a forum for exchange among national SIETAR organisations and supports the establishment and development of national SIETAR organisations. The Society subscribes to the mission of the global network of SIETAR organisations around the world and pursues the following goals:
- To enhance the awareness of intercultural issues in policy-making, business and education.
- To contribute to the solution of societal problems by facilitating communication between peoples of different cultures,
- To provide multi-disciplinary, professional expertise in intercultural issues in practice and research by establishing a network of intercultural specialists,
- To contribute to the development of standards for intercultural work,
- To support publications, personal and professional exchanges, research, projects as well as regional, national and international conferences and other events.
SIETAR Europa is seeking the expression of interest from interested persons to volunteer to serve on the working committees on Research and Publication and Grants & Projects:
Person Specification for Research and Publication
The research and publication committee has two main goals: firstly, to help SIETAR Europa build and maintain insights into leading research in the intercultural field; secondly, to enable SIETRAR Europa to publish our intercultural knowledge and expertise in different media.
The volunteer should have interest and knowledge in leading research in intercultural and related fields, and be interested to develop SIETAR EU research and publication competence, particularly through developing new research programmes and projects on culture and related disciplines. An important aspect of the responsibility will be to help build and maintain SIETAR EU’s reputation as an organisation able to research and evaluate, develop and advise on issues related to interculturalism.
The successful volunteer will be required to work within the framework of a committee chaired by a member of Board of SIETAR EU. The volunteer will be able to demonstrate a real passion for working collaboratively in a multi-cultural context and will be able to work and communicate effectively in a virtual team. They will enjoy working as part of an international team and will
have the opportunity to experience many aspects of diversity and interculturalism and contribute to the development of the organisation overall.
Person Specification for Grants and Projects
The primary role of the grants and projects committee is to enable SIETAR Europa to identify and access grants available to support projects in the intercultural field. The committee therefore enables the board to prioritise and develop projects for submission, whether solely or in collaboration with partners.
The volunteer should have some knowledge and experience in developing and submitting single and multi-organisation projects for funding by the EU or other international funding organisations. An important aspect of the responsibility will be to help develop the competence of SIETAR EU to access and attract international funding for projects and to work in joint-partner relationships with other organisations and educational institutions.
The successful volunteer will be required to work within the framework of a committee chaired by a member of Board of SIETAR EU. The volunteer will be able to demonstrate a real passion for working collaboratively in a multi-cultural context and will be able to work and communicate effectively in a virtual team. They will enjoy working as part of an international team and will have the opportunity to experience many aspects of diversity and interculturalism and contribute to the development of the organisation overall.
Expectations and Rewards
The selected volunteers would be expected to be available for the work of the committee for the period June 2015 – April 2016. Volunteers would be given concessionary access to SIETAR Europa events, including the next congress in May 2017.

President’s New Year Message 2015
President's Letter for 2015
Dear SIETAR Colleagues,
The lights of the Christians’ Christmas celebrations, as do the festivals of lights in other religious traditions like Jain and Hinduism, remind us of the stories of new life, triumph and new beginnings that have been preserved in the world’s cultural traditions. The stories are told and re-told as each generation tries to find new answers for old questions and pose new questions as they search for new situations.
SIETAR Europa is also aware of its own cultural stories and as 2015 comes within our gaze, we are seeking new narratives to refresh the cultural paradigms. Global and regional changes, as changes in local communities, challenge us to find new answers to old questions of culture, cultural interaction and intercultural communication
The search for new stories, new theories and cutting edge practices in the intercultural field, which is the thematic idea underlying the congress to be held in Valencia May 21-23, 2015, is also a search for new ways of being intercultural and relevant in a world that is irretrievably diverse. SIETAR Europa, as a leading intercultural organisation, treats the grasp for new cultural paradigms as an imperative, which is also reflected in the current process to realise a new mission and vision leading towards 2025.
As 2014 ends and as we awake to the hope and excitement of 2015, we praise the commitment of our Board of Directors, executives and working committees, whose tireless efforts gave a fresh impulse to our work. Our zeal and drive cannot slacken in the New Year.
The new vision and mission leading to 2025, the new theories and ideas for new practice emerging from the May 21-23 congress and the inauguration of a new president and Board are some of the exciting things to expect in 2015.

Re-election of SIETAR EU president
The Board of SIETAR, meeting in Berlin Oct 5-7, 2014, re-elected Dr Livingstone Thompson as President of SIETAR Europa, to serve for another period leading up to the congress in May 2015.
A process has also been set in motion to identify a successor for Dr Thompson.
In addtion, Dr Hanneke Brakenhoff of the Netherlands, was elected to the Executive Committee of the Board. That Executive Committee now comprises the following persons:

Maura Gallagher passes away
It is with deep regret that we have to inform you of the recent passing of Maura Gallagher. She is seen below (standing in white jacket) with Alice Davis (seated), Acting President of SIETAR Ireland.
Maura was a long-standing member of SIETAR Europa and was instrumental in introducing many people in Ireland and the UK to SIETAR. She was a founding member of SIETAR Ireland. Maura died in Ireland on July 27, 2014 and was buried a few days later. We honour her memory with appreciation for the contribution she made to SIETAR.
